Renault has continued the trend for reviving defunct model names with the unveiling of the Renault 4 E-Tech at the Paris Motor Show.

Expected in the UK in 2025 and following another revived model in the closely-related but smaller Renault 5, the new Renault 4 recalls a budget car built by the French manufacturer between 1961 and 1994.

Now the name has been applied to a compact all-electric crossover which Renault says will offer versatility and everyday practicality.

The new Renault 4 will go on sale with two drivetrain options that mirror those of the 5, a 120hp motor with a 40kWh battery offering a predicted 186-mile range, and a 150hp motor and 52kWh battery stretching the range to 250 miles. Charging capability at up to 100kW will be included.

The practical aspects of the car include making the most of the electric platform to extend the wheelbase by 80mm over the 5 and free up cabin space, to a 420-litre boot (including a 35-litre underfloor area for the charging cable) and a flat-folding front passenger seat allowing items of up to 2.2 metres long to be carried.

The car also references its predecessor in its styling, nods to the former Renault 4 including a single-piece illuminated grille, a modern representation of the earlier model’s signature three-part rear lights, bonnet lines that continue to the bottom of the grille, the shape of the rear quarter window and three lines sculpted into the doors to recall the original’s plastic protective panels.

The most distinctive reference to the original 4, however, is a canvas roof which opens electrically to reveal a space of 80 x 92cm.

Renault is yet to release a detailed UK specification or pricing for the new 4 but industry observers expect prices to start at below £30,000.
