Renault has updated its Captur and Symbioz SUVs with new powertrains, including a more powerful hybrid option.

Both models will now be offered with the ‘E-Tech 160’ hybrid powertrain, with battery capacity increased to 1.4kWh, (from 1.26kWh) and a larger 1.8-litre engine, which now produces 160PS.

Replacing the previous 1.6-litre hybrid, which had 145PS, the new models use around 5% less fuel, emitting 97 g/km, while accelerating from 0-62mph more than a second faster than the previous models.

Renault’s hybrid E-Tech 160 models are compliant with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations, and towing capacity increases from 750kg to 1,000kg.

The gearbox has also been updated, with smoother shifting and a new mode intended to reduce noise levels on the motorway.

The Captur E-Tech 160 will start at £25,195, while the Symbioz E-Tech 160 will start at £29,795.

A new, entry level model will also join the Symbioz range, with a mild-hybrid 1.3-litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox, producing 140PS and capable of 47.9mpg.

The mild-hybrid Symbioz emits 133 g/km, and starts at £27,395.

New standard equipment is also offered across the Captur range, with all models getting auto-hold and an electronic parking brake, while ‘techno’ and above models with hybrid drivetrains now get adaptive cruise control, with a speed limiter.

Top-of-the-range ‘esprit Alpine’ models also get lane centring and emergency lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, child locks, and rear cross traffic alert.

The updated range Captur will start at £22,195 for the evolution TCe90, rising to £28,795 for the esprit Alpine E-Tech 160.
