DESPITE the fact that I’ve been paying the mortgage for the past 20 years largely on the rewards of testing vans for various magazines and websites, my partner, during this period, has maintained a solid indifference towards the vagaries of Britain’s commercial vehicle industry. Until the other day that is. When the van on test here, the Citroen Relay L1H1 110, arrived on our driveway she exclaimed: “Wow, what a nice looking van!” That may not sound exactly like the loftiest of praise but as it is, as far as I can remember, her first ever utterance regarding any of the thousands of vehicles I’ve had on test during my lifetime, Citroen can take this as the highest of compliments! The Relay seems to have been around since the dawn of time now, but thanks to a series of relaunches and other nips and tucks, it has maintained its cutting edge against the opposition.
