Worth waiting for: Toyota bZ4X review

The Toyota bZ4X has always had the difficult job of being sensible in a market that rewards drama.
It arrived with a name that sounds like a password generated by a malfunctioning printer, a shape that tried very hard to look futuristic, and a brief that was unmistakably Toyota: be dependable, be efficient, do not make a fuss.
The trouble was that, early on, it felt a bit too ‘worthy’. Like a very clever school prefect. Admirable, yes, but not exactly the sort of thing that made you rush out and hug your nearest charger.
This update is different.
Toyota has not just fiddled with the front bumper and declared victory. It has gone back and properly improved the bits that matter. There are new battery options, more power, better range, faster charging, sharper responses, a quieter cabin and a much more convincing interior.
In other words, the bZ4X has moved from being an electric SUV you respected, to one you might actually want.
Power and choice
The big change is choice. There are now two battery sizes. The entry front wheel drive version gets a 57.7kWh battery and 165bhp, while the bigger battery cars use a 73.1kWh pack.

With that larger battery, the front wheel drive model makes 221bhp and the all wheel drive version jumps to 338bhp. That is a huge spread, and it means the range now covers everything from sensible everyday commuting to something genuinely brisk and long-legged.
If efficiency is the priority, the sweet spot is the front-wheel drive 73.1kWh car on 18-inch wheels. That one manages up to 352 miles on the WLTP cycle and returns 4.47 miles per kWh. For something this size, that’s a very strong result.
The smaller battery front wheel drive model still offers 274.6 miles, which is hardly tragic, while the all wheel drive 73.1kWh version delivers 291 miles and 338bhp.
The line-up now makes a lot more sense. One car for the spreadsheet people, one car for the slightly more enthusiastic spreadsheet people, and one car for people who want their Toyota EV to behave as though it has had an espresso.
That all-wheel drive version is properly quick, too. 0-62mph takes 5.1 seconds. The front wheel drive 73.1kWh car does it in 7.4, and the smaller battery model in 8.6.
None of these are slow, but the key thing is that the bZ4X no longer feels undernourished. It now has the sort of performance that makes an electric SUV feel effortless rather than merely adequate.

And that effortlessness is the thing you notice first on the move. The updated car feels calmer, cleaner and better resolved than before. The steering has more precision to it, and the front end no longer feels vague when you turn into a corner.
This is not a sports SUV, obviously. If you want an electric car that behaves like a terrier that has licked a wall socket, there are other places to look. But the bZ4X now feels more secure, more accurate and more connected than before, which means it inspires more confidence on a fast road.
Smooth sailing
Ride quality has also had some proper thought applied to it. Toyota has retuned the springs and dampers, stiffened parts of the structure and worked on vibration control, and the result is a car that feels more settled over rough surfaces, especially in the back.
This is the sort of thing that will spend its life carrying children, shopping, luggage, dogs, work bags, occasionally all at once, and the last thing you want is a family SUV that jitters itself to pieces over every pothole in Britain.
This one now feels more composed and more grown up. It still has some firmness over sharper edges, especially on bigger wheels, but it no longer feels as though it is permanently arguing with the road.
There is also a lot less noise. Toyota has added acoustic glass, more sound deadening, better sealing and extra work around the rear floor and motor mounts, and it shows.
The cabin is quieter, particularly at speed, which makes the whole car feel more expensive than before.
Electric energy
EVs live or die on refinement. Without engine noise to hide behind, every squeak, rustle and tyre roar becomes obvious. The new bZ4X does a much better job of shutting the world out.

Charging has improved, which is one of those things that sounds boring until you are standing in a wet service station wondering why your car is sipping electricity like it is trying to make it last all winter.
Toyota has added battery preconditioning, better battery cooling and heating, and improved charging consistency in cold weather.
With DC charging at up to 150kW, a 10% to 80% charge takes around 28 minutes. AC charging is 11kW on most versions, but the Excel gets a 22kW on board charger, which cuts AC charging time from 10% to 80% to 2.2 hours instead of 4.8. In real life, that makes the car much easier to live with.
And then there is the towing. The all-wheel drive model can now tow 1,500kg, while front wheel drive versions manage 750kg. That may not matter if your weekends are mostly spent queueing for coffee, but if you occasionally need to drag something heavy about, it gives the bZ4X a level of usefulness many electric rivals still lack.
All-wheel abilities
Off-road ability has not been forgotten. Toyota cannot build an SUV without at least vaguely implying that it might one day cross a stream in a Scandinavian forest.
The all-wheel drive model gets X Mode and Grip Control, can wade through 500mm of water, and has 177mm of ground clearance.
It’s not a Land Cruiser, but it is more capable than the average electric crossover that would probably panic at the sight of a damp campsite.
Behind the wheel
Inside, the bZ4X is much improved. The old cabin always felt as though it had been designed by several departments that had not met. This new one is cleaner and more coherent.

There is a new ultra slim dashboard, a larger 14 inch multimedia screen, a lower digital island centre console and a more open feel overall.
The driver display still sits high, above the steering wheel, which takes a moment to get used to but works well once you are in the rhythm of it. There are now twin wireless phone chargers, better rear USB placement, improved storage and a generally more sensible layout.
It is also roomy. The wheelbase is a generous 2,850mm, which gives the rear seats plenty of leg room and a flat floor.
Boot space is up to 452 litres, which is enough for three decent suitcases or two mountain bikes if you are the sort of person who likes to fling themselves down hills for fun.
In ordinary human terms, it means the bZ4X is perfectly capable of handling family life without fuss.
The grades are straightforward. Icon opens the range from £39,995 and still gets a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, the 14 inch screen, power tailgate, dual wireless phone charging and blind spot monitoring.

Design adds the larger battery, more power, a panoramic view monitor and a few useful extras such as a windscreen de icer.
Excel sits at the top with the option of front or all-wheel drive, plus 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, synthetic leather upholstery, a digital rear view mirror and the faster 22kW AC charging.
There is plenty of safety kit, as you would expect. Toyota Safety Sense is standard, with pre collision assistance, lane trace assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, emergency steering assist and safe exit assist.
In other words, if you do something silly, the car will attempt to save you from yourself, which is increasingly useful given the state of modern roads and modern drivers.
The verdict
The bZ4X has become more than just a dependable electric Toyota. It still has all the solid, rational qualities the brand trades on, but it now wraps them in a package that feels far more complete. The range is competitive, the charging is better, the ride is more polished, the steering is sharper and the cabin is finally somewhere you would actively choose to spend time.
It is still not a wildly emotional thing. You won’t step out of it and immediately write poetry about the steering.
The bZ4X is now a very convincing electric SUV. It does all the important things properly, and does them with less compromise than before. It is practical, quick enough, efficient, better built than most and now genuinely pleasant to drive.
So yes, the name is still absurd. And yes, it still looks like a concept car that has been left too close to a heat source.
Underneath all that, though, there is now a very good electric SUV. One that feels as though Toyota has stopped treating the EV world as an interesting experiment and started taking it seriously.
And that is why this new bZ4X matters. It is no longer just the sensible choice. It is the right sort of sensible. Which is far more useful.

3. Maintenance Cost
