The BMW 3-series gets a new look, revised engines and upgraded equipment in September. Many models in the revised 3-series line-up will have cheaper running costs.
The 318d saloon and Touring will be available with a six-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. The 318d auto saloon returns a combined 52.3mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 144g/km.
The 318d manual saloon will be even cheaper to run. It averages 60.1mpg and emits 123g/km of CO2.
The revisions will also usher in a more powerful, more economical 330d. The new manual 330d saloon combines 0-62mph in 6.1sec and 155mph pace with 49.6mpg economy and 152g/km CO2 emissions.
The 325d will also have lower running costs than before. In manual saloon form, the facelifted 325d returns an average of 49.6mpg and emits 153g/km.
There are five diesel and five petrol engines in the line-up. Other engines are carried over unchanged.
Visual changes are minor. There are two new feature lines on the bonnet, a revised grille, reshaped front apron and twin corona headlights as standard.
The rear has a new-look valance, restyled boot lid and new light clusters with LED bulbs as standard.
The inside has a revised centre console. The iDrive control system, where fitted, has been revised in a bid to make it easier to use. Plusher materials and repositioned switchgear are also part of the revamp.
Active head restraints, which reduce the effects of whiplash, are fitted as standard across the line-up.
The new BMW 3-series saloon and Touring go on sale on 20 September 2008. Prices have still to be announced.
