Škoda has added a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of the Superb iV Hatch, as the fuel type gains popularity across European markets.

Previously, Škoda only offered a PHEV powertrain on the Superb Estate.

The hatch model has 272PS, up by 68 over the Superb Estate iV PHEV. Škoda said it will not make the more powerful powertrain available on the estate model.

It uses the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 25.7kWh battery. The power was increased through engine tweaks and software changes for the powertrain control unit.

Škoda said that the Superb with the 272PS PHEV powertrain has an improved towing capacity of 2,000kg.

It gains 10mm larger rear brake discs and cooling ducts for the front brakes to handle the increase in performance.

Charging speed remains the same as the Superb Estate iV PHEV, with a 10% to 80% charge taking 26 minutes.
