The largest and most powerful Smart model made yet could be on UK sale in the middle of 2025, at prices predicted to start from around £35,000.

The Smart #5 has been unveiled at an event in Australia, a market the revived all-electric brand has big aspirations in. The third model in the new Smart portfolio is described as the brand’s most versatile in its product range.

The #5 is a mid-sized SUV measuring up at 4.7 metres long with a 2.9-metre wheelbase. It follows the current Smart design language with details such as a panoramic roof, frameless doors and short front and rear overhangs, but with a more bluff, boxy front-end look befitting its outdoor image.

Technical details are scarce at present though the new model is built on the same 800-volt platform as its #1 and #3 sisters. Smart states that it will employ a 100kWh battery with a ‘super-charging function’ that will allow replenishment from 10 to 80% in 15 minutes, and a potential range between charges of close to 460 miles. Some reports predict that the most powerful dual-motor version of the #5 could have more than 640hp on tap.

The interior will be tech-heavy including a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display, a 10.3-inch digital instrument display for the driver and two 13-inch infotainment touchscreens.

The #5 will be pitched as an outdoor adventure vehicle, details including the availability of underbody protection, a roof carrier, side steps, a side bag and ladder, and even five seats that can double as beds.
