Smart has begun testing the #2, an electric vehicle (EV) that will serve as a successor to the now-discontinued, entry level Fortwo.
The #2 will debut in late 2026.
A new platform, the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), is being developed for the #2.
Smart is testing the ECA using bodies of the Fortwo, ensuring that the #2 will have similar dimensions to it.
The R&D team are currently refining ride and handling for city agility, optimising the braking system and verifying structural strength at a facility in China.
Smart said that the car will retain the Fortwo’s rear wheel drive dynamics and two-door, two-seat layout.
The Mercedes-Benz design team will be responsible for the exterior and interior.
