Start Rescue urges drivers to check roof racks ahead of long drives

Start Rescue is urging motorists to check roof racks, roof boxes and cycle carriers, warning that poorly secured loads can lead to vehicle damage, breakdowns and road safety risks.

Lee Puffett, managing director of Start Rescue, said: “Take the time to check every fastening nut and strap – not just when you fit the rack but regularly during your journey.

“At motorway speeds, the wind can easily loosen fixings and cause roof-mounted loads to escape.”

The company advised drivers to remember the additional height created by roof boxes and cycle carriers, warning that low bridges, tree branches and car park entrances can cause expensive damage if overlooked.

Puffett also urged motorists to follow manufacturers’ weight limits and distribute luggage carefully.

He added: “Check the maximum weight a roof rack or box can hold in the owner’s manual and adjust tyre pressures to suit.

“Try to pack heavy bags in the car and lighter items in the roof box to keep the car’s centre of gravity as low as possible for safe driving. And remember to lock boxes and bikes to deter thieves.”
