The Peugeot 308 is proving a strong seller, and the new engine can only improve matters

PEUGEOT has announced the first details of a new super-economical petrol engine option for its popular 308.

The turbocharged three-cylinder PureTECH e-THP petrol engine produces 130 horsepower but in the 308, it’s still good for combined fuel economy of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 107g/km. In fact, Peugeot has managed to squeeze 1124.7 miles out of a single tank on one example in a special test run, equivalent to 99.1mpg.

Company car drivers who are determined to get the very best tax treatment and fuel economy may still be tempted to go for the 120 horsepower BlueHDi 1.6-litre diesel engine option, which has a combined fuel economy of 91.1mpg and CO2 emissions of just 82g/km – but the petrol engines are closing the gap. According to Peugeot, both the e-THP petrol engine and the BluHDi diesel are right at the top of the class for economy and emissions.

Three-cylinder petrol engines were unknown in the 308’s size class until Ford introduced the impressive 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in the Ford Focus in 2012. Less powerful versions of the PureTECH engines will appear shortly in Peugeot’s 208 and 2008 models.
