Volvo V60 diesel hybrid
The Volvo V60 diesel hybrid is enough to make any hybrid cynic take notice. The combination of performance and low running costs sounds almost too good to be true

A CAR that does 0-60mph in under 6 seconds – but will only cost you £66 a month in company car tax?

Hmmm, too good to be true?

But that’s the promise of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid.

The Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid uses a 215hp 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine to drive the front wheels, while the 70hp electric motor sends power to the rear.

0-60mph in 5.9 seconds and £66 a month in company car tax

And that gives 0-60mph performance of 5.9 seconds – on a par with the BMW 328i Sport Touring.

But here’s the thing. The BMW emits 159g/km of CO2, meaning your company car tax bill is a whopping £1449 a year (£2898 for 40% tax payers), despite a much lower P11D value than the Volvo.

But the Volvo has class-leading mpg and just 48g/km in CO2 emissions.

So company car drivers paying the basic 20% tax will shell out just £788 a year in company car tax, while 40% tax payers are looking at a bill of £1575.

However, none of this matters if the car isn’t comfortable, luxurious and good to drive – and there’s no better way of putting this to the test than via one of the country’s leading chauffeur companies.

Tristar Worldwide has just taken delivery of three eco-friendly Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid models as part of the Energy Saving Trust’s Plugged-In Fleet Initiative (PIFI).

The Volvos are being trialed for up to eight months by key decision makers at Tristar, before they are rolled out to the teams as fully functional chauffeur cars. Tristar bosses will fully assess the operational benefits before giving the green light to its latest form of eco-friendly motoring.
