Vauxhall Ampera
Vauxhall was an early arrival on the plug-in hybrid scene. The Ampera is refined and competent

Vauxhall Ampera

One of the first plug-in hybrids to go on sale in the UK, the Vauxhall Ampera is still going strong.

The 40-mile range is good enough for the majority of journeys but there’s a range extending four-cylinder engine underneath the bonnet as a back-up, which can keep the batteries charged.

Officially the fuel economy stands at 235.4mpg and the CO2 emissions are 27g/km, which puts it in a lowly 5% BIK band. It may not have the kudos of a Porsche badge but this Golf-sized car is extremely refined, comfortable on the move and sufficiently hi-tech to warrant its £30,000-plus price-tag.

Our company car favourite: Vauxhall Ampera Electron

  • Price: £35,440
  • BIK band: 5%
  • Range: 300-plus miles
  • 0-62mph: 8.7 seconds

Tesla Model S

It’s still relatively early days for electric car manufacturer, Tesla, but there are already whispers that this 5 Series-sized car could just be the best EV to date.

The first right-hand-drive models will arrive in the UK in March.

Models with the larger 85kWh battery can theoretically travel 265 miles on a single charge and if you go for the top of the range model you’ll also find a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds.

If you’re worried about charging up the massive battery then take solace in the fact that Tesla is working on a range of ‘Supercharger’ stations around the UK so within a few years you’ll be able to travel along most major motorways, charging up in 5 minutes as you go.
