Toyota has launched a hybrid version of its smallest car, the Aygo X, which is expected to have the lowest CO2 emissions of any non-plug-in car on the market.

The hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5-litre three cylinder engine with an electric motor, for a total of 116PS, 44 more than the non-hybrid model.

Power is delivered through the front wheels only, with a CVT automatic gearbox offered as standard equipment.

It coincides with a facelift for the Aygo X, giving the model a new front end, with new lights and a slim grille mirroring the look of Toyota’s latest models.

Colours such as Cinnamon, Lavender, and Jasmine will be offered, with a contrasting black roof available.

18-inch wheels will become an option for the first time, as well as a retracting canvas roof on higher-trim models.

A digital instrument cluster, combined with a larger central screen and a new wireless charger modernise the interior.

When the model goes on sale at the end of 2025, it will become the only Aygo X model offered, with the 1.0-litre pure combustion model set to go off sale, and the manual gearbox to die with it.

To accommodate the larger hybrid powertrain, Toyota has extended the front overhang by 76mm, and relocated the 12v battery to under the boot floor, without any boot space penalty.

The battery cells will be mounted longitudinally under the rear seats, as opposed to Toyota’s typical parallel layout, due to the packaging constraints imposed by the Aygo’s small size.

Thicker glass and additional soundproofing have been added, as well as safety features, such as Proactive Driving Assist, which gently applies the brakes when the driver gets too close to the car in front.

The hybrid model is likely to raise the price and insurance costs for Toyota’s A-segment model, at a time where more and more of its rivals are going off sale due to low profit margins and increasing difficulty in meeting new regulations, such as the EU’s cybersecurity standards.

Toyota estimated that the model will have lifetime carbon emissions 18% lower than the previous model, mainly due to its new powertrain, as well as new interior materials, including animal-free options.
