Toyota has been named the most reliable car manufacturer in the UK, according to data from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG), based on 12,000 car repair claims processed between 1st March 2024 and 28th February 2025.

The study, which excluded models with fewer than 1,000 sales across WSG’s dealer network during the same period, ranked 22 volume manufacturers on claim frequency and average repair cost.

Toyota led the rankings with a claim rate of just 5.58%, the lowest in the study, and the lowest average repair cost at £419.24.

The top three repair issues for Toyota were alternators, averaging £355.26, starter motors and solenoids (£304.45), and concentric slave cylinders (£483.19).

The brand remains a popular choice for fleet operators and taxi drivers, who rely on low running costs and reliability in high-mileage environments.

Honda ranked second, with a claim rate of 8.85%. Its most frequent issues included ABS wheel speed sensors (£196.13), batteries (£210.34), and air conditioning condensers (£651.47).

Honda’s VTEC engines and straightforward engineering were noted as contributing factors to the brand’s strong performance, with many vehicles exceeding 100,000 miles without major repairs.

Mazda secured third place with a claim rate of 11.47%. Common issues included batteries (£234.82), alternators (£493.30), and turbochargers (£1,066.67).

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Land Rover ranked lowest among the 22 manufacturers, with a claim rate of 35.86% and the highest average repair cost at £984.04.

The brand was responsible for 60% of the 20 most expensive claims handled by WSG during the period.

Common repair items included diesel particulate filters (£1,897.90), engine repairs (£5,869.73), and Nox sensors (£683.12). Despite these figures, Land Rover maintains strong demand due to its blend of off-road capability and luxury appeal.

Martin Binnee, operations director at WSG, said: “Toyota consistently ranks among the top in reliability surveys from What Car?, JD Power, and Auto Express.

“Their vehicles report fewer faults than competitors, reinforcing their reputation for durability and dependability.

“From the compact and efficient Toyota Yaris to the rugged Land Cruiser and the ever-popular Corolla, Toyota models are engineered to withstand high mileage with minimal issues.

“Their commitment to high-quality engineering, cutting-edge hybrid technology, and low maintenance costs makes them the most reliable car brand in the UK.

“The automotive industry is continuously evolving, with manufacturers improving reliability through better engineering, smarter software, enhanced materials, and predictive diagnostics.

“While no car is entirely failure-proof, brands are actively reducing common causes of breakdowns, making vehicle ownership more convenient and cost-effective than ever before.”
