Tyresafe launches campaign to highlight key areas in vehicle tyre safety

Poor tyre quality and a lack of maintenance is one of the leading causes of accidents on the road as well as the reason for MOT failures, plus any driver that is found to have unsafe vehicles could face three penalty points per tyre along with a fine of up to £2,500.

28 October 2020

OCTOBER is Tyresafe’s Tyre Safety month and it is certainly a good time of the year to remind people of the importance of tyre safety as the driving conditions start to get worse heading into winter.

The month-long initiative is designed to alert the 33.6 million motorists on UK roads of the importance of proper tyre care and this year they have made an extra effort to catch people’s attention.

The 2020 Campaign

The 2020 campaign uses the well-known acronym A.C.T (air pressure, condition and tread) as part of a tagline reading “Are Your Tyres Ready for ACTion?” And has made clever use of films references including The Good, The Bad & The Under-inflated, Done in 60 Seconds and Judge Tread. The campaign aims to get people to check the condition of their car tyres at least once a month and always before a long journey.

Dangers and consequences

Poor tyre quality and a lack of maintenance is one of the leading causes of accidents on the road as well as the reason for MOT failures, plus any driver that is found to have unsafe vehicles could face three penalty points per tyre along with a fine of up to £2,500. It is clear that tyre maintenance is important from a safety and financial standpoint, so how can a motorist make sure that their tyres stay in good condition?

Tyre maintenance

Motorists need to keep the ACT acronym in mind when it comes to tyre maintenance:

Air pressure: Use a tyre pressure gauge and keep tyres topped up to manufacturer’s recommended pressure (this can be found in the manual).

Condition: Physically examining the condition of each tyre and looking out for bulges, lumps, cuts and cracks. If damaged, it is important to buy replacement car tyres so that the vehicle is safe to drive.

Tread depth: The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm which can be measured either with a tread depth gauge or a 20p coin. Again, it is important to replace tyres and many recommend doing this even before reaching the legal limit.

These are the main ways to keep your tyres well-maintained and to promote safety. You could also rotate your tyres (including a spare), drive with caution on the roads, switch to winter tyres in the winter months and get your tyres checked at the garage from time to time.

Tyre Safety Month is incredibly important and something that every motorist should be aware of, especially heading into the winter months. The key is to make sure that you are checking your tyres monthly, to be aware of the dangers and consequences of unsafe tyres and to replace and unsafe tyres as a priority if you find any that are not roadworthy or in bad condition.
