Be prepared when travelling on the continent, not all rules and regulations are the same

THERE are many reasons why you might need to drive abroad for business purposes, for instance for meetings or for transport and deliveries. Whatever your European driving needs though one thing’s for certain, there are rules, regulations and protective measures you should be taking. Not only will these keep your business on the right side of the law, it also safeguards your assets against any potentially sticky situations like breakdowns or simply getting lost.

General Legal Requirements

In different EU countries there are certain items you need to have in your vehicles as a legal requirement. This can include:

  • Copies of your card and paper licenses
  • Breathalyser kits
  • Hi-vis jackets for all passengers
  • A Safety Triangle
  • Tool kits and road-side safety packs
  • A GB sticker or sign

Some countries are stricter than others when it comes to what is required, but it is simpler to have everything on board just in case.

More Specific Legal Checks

This is particularly relevant for delivery and logistics firms that use HGVs and other large vehicles. Along with the above, make sure your drivers are fully licenced and have any relevant documentation that shows they can drive a commercial vehicle across the EU states.

Comprehensive Cover

The last thing you want is to lose business because you fail to meet a delivery deadline or you can’t get to a meeting because you’ve broken down. What’s even worse about this is if you’re in a foreign country without any breakdown cover you’ll first have to overcome the language barrier to organise being rescued and of course there’s the expense. Fortunately, you’ll be pleased to know that there are providers like Breakdown Direct who specialise in providing policies to cover business vehicles specifically for European driving.

Researching the Roads

It’s worth you conducting a little research into what it’s like to drive on different roads across the EU, as well as telling your drivers or staff to do the same. Everything from the best routes, to where to avoid and what the conditions of the roads are can all be invaluable information to know – especially if it’s the first time you’ve been in this country.

So, if you’re about to start travelling abroad for business, or you want to get your vehicles fit for purpose, follow some of this advice to make your fleet is safe and legal.
