Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has launched all-wheel-drive (AWD) plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the California and Multivan.
The eHybrid 4Motion models feature a 19.7kWh battery, allowing for up to 59 miles (95km) of electric range, with an electric motor on each axle providing AWD capabilities.
The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine powers the front wheels only, with the rear axle’s electric motor activating depending on grip levels, and drive mode selection, with sport mode activating the system permanently.
AWD is available up to 81 mph (130 kph), and the system allows the vehicle to power a single axle at a time, when conditions require.
Maximum output of the eHybrid 4Motion models is 245PS, with the powertrain consisting of 177PS provided by the combustion engine, a 115PS electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and an electric motor on the rear axle, with an output of 136PS.
The battery is located under the front seats for better weight distribution, as the fuel tank is under the rear seats.
50kW DC charging is supported, allowing drivers to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes.
By using the front electric motor as a generator powered by the engine, the rear axle can be powered even when the drive battery is discharged.
The eHybrid models also offer stationary air conditioning as standard, heating or cooling the vehicle for up to 30 minutes when plugged in, or 10 minutes when unplugged, using power from the drive battery.
California models can be ordered with a system that enables continuous operation of the heating function.
The feature can be activated through a mobile app, or through the vehicle’s infotainment system.
The combustion engine features a variable turbine geometry turbocharger, plasma-coated cylinder walls, running on the Miller cycle, allowing for increased efficiency even when the electric battery is discharged.
UK pricing is yet to be announced for the Volkswagen AWD PHEV Multivan and California models.
