Volvo Penta is showcasing a mobile battery energy storage solution designed to provide fast electric vehicle (EV) charging in locations where grid capacity or permanent charging infrastructure is limited.
The company is displaying its battery energy storage system (BESS) subsystem at IAA Transportation 2026 alongside the Hivolt 380X, a ready-to-deploy mobile BESS unit developed by Contour Advanced Systems using Volvo Penta battery technology.
For transport and logistics operators, mobile battery-powered charging can provide additional capacity without relying solely on fixed grid connections or waiting for permitting and civil works.
The technology can also be deployed at temporary locations and events or where existing charging has been disrupted.
In permanent installations, battery storage can supplement limited grid connections to support high-power EV charging.
Tommi Wulff, sales and business development manager at Volvo Penta, said: “Reliable power infrastructure is critical to the transition toward zero-emission transport.
“Battery energy storage can help bring fast charging to locations where grid capacity is limited or permanent infrastructure is not yet in place.
“At IAA Transportation, we are showing how Volvo Penta can support this transition by providing a proven, scalable BESS subsystem that our partners can build into complete charging and energy storage systems.”
