Volvo has started the rollout of a major software update on 2.5 million of its cars, including all cars built since 2020 with Google built-in.

The update, called Volvo UX, improves the design of the infotainment system, reduces the number of taps to get to key functions and puts the most common functions on the home screen.

Changes were made following real-world research and customer feedback.

It adds a contextual bar, which suggests different functions based on the situation, enabling it to suggest the external cameras when driving at low sppeds.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models have a Drive Modes function on the home screen, making it easier to switch from hybrid to electric power.

Volvo said it is one of the most comprehensive infotainment software updates from any manufacturer and is designed to create a consistent, contemporary design philosophy on all Volvo models.

The update also prepares cars for the rollout of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI).

Anders Bell, chief engineering and technology officer at Volvo Cars, said: “This update is one of the largest over-the-air updates in automotive history, leveraging years of investment in Volvo Cars’ tech stack to improve life with their cars for millions of people.
