The VW Golf tops an AA survey of which cars are most sought by used car buyers visiting its website

IN the most recent AA Cars’ league table, the evergreen German hatchback has beaten all-comers to become the most popular used car on the market.

The appeal of the VW Golf, and its status as a great value used car has never been questioned, and is underlined by its recent receipt of What Car?‘s coveted ‘Used Car of the Year’ award.

The little-hatchback-that-could even managed to scoop first place in The AA Cars ‘Most Viewed Used Cars’ league table; an online review that details which used cars have been most viewed by potential buyers on The AA website.

Of the 725 most viewed models (taken from a pool of 120,000 potential candidates), the iconic VW Golf came out on top.

Its rival, the Ford Focus pulled up in fourth place, while the Vauxhall Astra just makes it into the top 10 at number 9.

There’s even more good news for VW, with its Transporter van appearing at 14 and the ever-popular Passat at 17. VW-owned Audi also sees its A4 parked firmly in sixth place, A3 into seventh and sports coupe, the TT, into 10th.

However it’s not just Volkswagen who will be celebrating this week.  The Mercedes C Class takes the number two spot, with its nemesis the BMW 320 trailing in 12th place. Lovers of the 4×4 will not be disappointed, with the Land Rover Discovery rolling up at five, the indestructible Defender at 16, and the original Range Rover at 20.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, small cars have also proven to be popular. Much sought after by new drivers on the lookout for vehicles with low insurance costs, the Ford Fiesta nips in at 13, beating the Vauxhall Corsa at 18.

But it’s not all good news. The Alfa Romeo 146 and 145 both languish at the bottom of the league in positions 724 and 725 respectively, and Rolls Royce doesn’t fare much better, with its Carmargue at a miserable 721 (admittedly however, a Rolls Royce may not be the top choice for budget conscious buyers looking for a good value used car.)

Upon reflection, the findings from AA Cars seem to demonstrate how used car buyers in the UK value a refined and reliable vehicle over horsepower and speed. The VW Golf, this year’s victorious vehicle, is cost-effective but doesn’t skimp on style, making it the top choice for savvy spenders in 2013.
