VOLKSWAGEN Commercial Vehicles has introduced the fifth-generation Caddy, redesigned from the ground up on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform architecture.
It’s a striking new look for VW’s best-selling compact van. In 2019, nearly 11,000 Caddy models were sold in the UK and the latest version introduces a range of new high-end technologies and driver assistance systems.
Networked infotainment and digitalised control systems allow the Caddy to reach new levels of connectivity. Three trim levels will be available, all offering enhanced specification over the previous generation. Prices start from £17,800 (RRP ex VAT and OTR)
The latest Caddy will be offered as Caddy Cargo (panel van) and a range of passenger car variants. In standard wheelbase form, the newCargo measures 4,500 mm in length, an increase of 93 mm over the previous model. The wheelbase has also grown by 73 mm to 2,755 mm
Width is up 57 mm to 1,613 mm while the width between the wheel arches has increased by 60 mm to 1,230 mm. Width of the rear opening aperture has increased by 51 mm to 1,234 mm
A Euro pallet can now be carried sideways in the back of the cargo space. The maximum storage capacity of the Caddy Cargo with standard wheelbase is 3.1 m3. The new Caddy Cargo Maxi offers even more space (3.7 m3) and has a 215 mm longer wheelbase. The Maxi also features 145mm wider sliding doors
Cargo Maxi has room for up to two Euro pallets, which can optionally be loaded sideways in the middle and back or sideways in the middle and lengthways in the back. New options include power latching side doors and tailgate, LED headlights and rear lights plus new metallic paint finishes
There are now 19 assistance systems now available to Caddy Cargo customers – six are completely new for the fifth-generation model. These include:
- Travel Assist, which delivers assisted driving across the full speed range. The Caddy Cargo’s redesigned multifunction steering wheel is also equipped with capacitive sensors to prevent false alarms
- Volkswagen’s 1Trailer Assist is available for the Caddy for the first time. This advanced system delivers significantly easier reverse manoeuvring operations
- In addition to the new technology, the Caddy Cargo’s existing assistance systems have been significantly expanded and updated with new functions
- Caddy Cargo’s eSIM means that the vehicle can automatically make eCalls to emergency services in the event of an accident
- Multi-function steering wheel, electric windows, height-adjustable driving seat and electric parking brake with Auto Hold function fitted as standard to all models
- Mid-level models (from £19,275 RRP exc VAT) introduce electronically controlled air conditioning system, body coloured bumper and rear parking sensors, along with power- adjustable lumbar support for drivers seat and leather multi-function steering wheel
- Range-topping models (from £21,475 RRP exc VAT) add Discover Media satellite navigation, Lights & Vision pack (including auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rain sensors with automatic wipers and intermittent control) and alloy wheels
- Fifth-generation Caddy Cargo will open for order in December 2020, with first UK deliveries expected at the end of Q1 2021
