It’s understandable that the demand for used cars has significantly risen since the prices of many commodities have hit the roof. Yes, buying a used car can be a good way to save money. But, this decision can result in a total disaster if you don’t choose the right car.

If you are unsure what to look for when buying a used car in 2022, continue reading these vital tips. We’ve also provided a checklist at the end.

Be patient while shopping

Since you’re not walking into a new car dealership, getting what you want from the used car market can be overwhelming after clearly establishing the required specs. Whether electric or gasoline-powered cars, patience will help you not rush into any bad deal. You’ll be careful to research prices, read reviews about the car you want, and check for any peculiar problems with the car model, VIN report, etc. Also, try and conduct an MOT history check from Reg Car Check to ensure it’s up to date with servicing.

Use your head, not your heart

With millions of used cars available for sale, the odds are stacked up in your favour to get a good deal. Apart from not letting your love for a car impair your judgement, you don’t want to take a seller’s word for it. If you’re looking for a rare vintage car, there’s always a better deal out there, so don’t feel pressured to buy just any car. Be sure to choose one that meets your budget and requirements.

Know your rights

Bear in mind that you’ll be responsible for spotting any potential issues with the car you want to buy, regardless of whether it’s from a private or individual seller. You’ll have to ask the right questions, and there’s no guarantee the seller will be 100% truthful.

The good news is that buying a used car from a dealership gives you a fair amount of legal rights. Used cars must have a full-service history and should be roadworthy and in good condition. In the UK, you’re legally allowed to return a used car within 6 months if it’s deemed to be damaged before purchase.

Make an outright purchase or exchange

Whether you have an existing car and want to trade it for another or you prefer an outright purchase, careful research of your car’s current value will help. If you can’t get a fair value from your search, you can take your car to a dealership to provide an exchange quote to avoid signing a bad deal.

Checklist

If you’re buying from an independent seller, you’ll want to be extra vigilant, so here’s a checklist to bear in mind.

  • Engine: lookout for leaks under the car, the oil level, condition of head gasket, the sound of the engine (tapping sound can be a red flag), and exhaust (a good car should not give off blue or black emission. If anything should coming out of the exhaust, it should be steam or water droplets)
  • Gearbox and clutch: You should feel the smoothness and not experience jerking when changing the gear. Also, check the clutch biting point.
  • Body: While this one is dependent on choice, everyone loves a neat car. So, look out for signs of significant damage. You might need a torch to check the under for corrosion.
  • Wheels and tires: Check the read depth and condition of the rubber.
  • Interior: you are not just checking the seats and roof here. You want to look at the dashboard for warning lights. Investigate any warning lights you don’t understand.
  • Test drive: Don’t forget to test drive as you may not notice some wired sound or issues until a car is in drive mode.
