Zaptec and So Energy launch UK home EV charging partnership

Zaptec and So Energy have launched a UK partnership designed to help electric vehicle drivers get more from home charging.

The partnership combines So Energy’s So EV tariff with Zaptec’s home charging technology, giving customers access to lower-cost overnight charging using 100% renewable electricity.

The So EV tariff allows customers to charge an electric vehicle for 7.5p per kWh between midnight and 5am. So Energy said shifting charging into off-peak hours could significantly reduce EV running costs for drivers able to charge at home.

In an example provided by So Energy, charging a Tesla Model Y overnight on So EV costs around 1.7p per mile, compared with 17.6p per mile using a typical public rapid charger.

The companies said public charging remained an essential part of the UK charging infrastructure, but smart home charging offered many drivers the chance to reduce day-to-day charging costs.

So Energy has selected Zaptec as its preferred premium home charging partner. The Zaptec Go 2 includes solar-ready capability, vehicle-to-grid-ready architecture, MID-certified energy metering, native OCPP interoperability and a 5-year guarantee on hardware and installation.

Zaptec said interoperability was becoming increasingly important as homes become more connected, with open standards allowing vehicles, charge points and energy management systems to communicate more intelligently.

Analysis from LCP Delta cited by the companies found around 3 quarters of UK EV drivers already use dedicated EV tariffs, one of the highest adoption rates in Europe.
