Business drivers are planning their road travel more carefully, according to National Car Rental.
National Car Rental reports an 18.7% fall in average mileage per rental over two years.
The mileage reduction equates to 30,000 fewer grammes of CO2 per rental.
However, the average mileage in estate cars rose 15.4% and was up 14.6% for people-carriers.
The implication is that drivers are being more careful about choosing the right car for the purpose – larger vehicles for longer journeys, smaller ones for shorter trips.
The more widespread use of portable satellite navigation is also believed to be a factor in the overall reduction in average mileage.
Tim Bailey, fleet director, National Car Rental, said: “We can only speculate but it does suggest our customers are planning their journeys, being selective about how far they drive and choosing an appropriate vehicle – indicating a greater consciousness of environmental issues, congestion and fuel consumption.
“This has to be a step in the right direction. It suggests people are beginning to ask themselves how they can travel more wisely. Vehicle rental helps them do just that, ensuring they have access to the right vehicles for the right job.”
