Like the original Beetle, the iD 3 is rear-wheel-drive with motor and gearbox located on the rear axle. The drive unit develops up to 204 PS in the ID.3 yet, incredibly, together the motor and gearbox weigh only 90 kg and are compact enough to fit into a gym bag
The three cylinder 1.0 engine is not only the cheapest in the range to buy, it is also cheaper to tax and run, and in reality, maybe all you need with everyday driving. It’s punchy, super refined and responsive, definitely one of the best three cylinder units around. The entry-level petrol engine certainly offers sufficient power and is definitely worth considering to keep costs down.
If you want one, be prepared for a lengthy wait as demand has been extremely strong.. Two versions will be available from launch, a five-seat ID. Buzz and an ID. Buzz Cargo commercial van with up to three seats across the front and the cargo box behind. Further versions are planned but not before next year - including a long wheelbase version with more seating and versatility.
The Caddy is now in its fifth generation and while there are larger five-seat VWs around, this version is probably the best value, starting at under £25,500, and the most practical as a family vehicle. It sits on the same VW Group MQB platform which means it shares many of the attributes of the latest Golf, including engines, safety equipment and many interior features.
Flag waver for VW’s technology is loaded with equipment and can be driven in purely electric mode, albeit with fairly limited range by today’s standards. It’s also, conversely, the most powerful road-going Volkswagen of all time.
Possibly one of the most fun cars to drive on the road. The Golf R is the flagship of the Golf product line and this fifth edition of the performance hatchback is also the most powerful production Golf to date.
There are not many proper four-seat convertibles at a reasonable price around and those that are cheaper are not really credible for travelling four-up – unless you have (very) young children in the back seats.
Now in its eighth generation the VW Golf has grown considerably over the years. Put the original Mk 1 alongside the latest version and it would like like parent and child – only the youngest one would be the larger.
It’s pitched against the likes of sister brand Audi’s A5 and the Kia Stinger. So what does it offer busy SME drivers and user choosers?
On the road, this car feels safe, solid, predictable and stable. Surprises are not what you want in a Passat – and you really don’t get any.
For such a big beast, pretty smooth and mounted on 20-inch wheels it copes very well with the pot-hole ridden roads of the UK.
