It also highlights various trim parts including the central display, front stowage facility on the centre console, handle recesses, door pockets, front and rear footwells, overhead console, and tweeters (if the vehicle is equipped with the Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system).

The technology isn’t the only highlight of the new E-Class’s interior. The seats are unique to each trim level and according to Mercedes, their ergonomic, sculptural form are perfect for long journeys. Another neat new feature in this segment is a Heat Comfort package that includes heated armrests in the doors and on the centre console.

It is not just the front seats that are special in the new E-Class, as the rear bench seat is available with an optional three-piece backrest with a 40% – 20% – 40% split – maximising rear versatility.

The central armrest also features convenience items such a stowage box and two pop-out drinks holders. There’s also the option of a holder for a tablet PC for the rear passengers.

On top of technical innovations, the new E-Class will be powered by new engine generation that includes an all-new four-cylinder diesel in the entry-level E220d.

All engines for the new E-Class are equipped with the ECO start/stop function. The petrol engines meet the requirements of the EU 6 emissions standard, while the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine is already configured with future RDE limits in mind.

Another model that will be added after the launch is the E350e, which is a Plug-In Hybrid that can travel up to 30 kilometres purely on emission-free electric power. Yet, it is still a strong performer with a combined output of 279bhp and 600Nm of torque.

The most powerful diesel version of the new E-Class will boast a six-cylinder engine incorporating advanced SCR exhaust technology, 258 hp and peak torque of 620 Nm. Other engine highlights include a new four-cylinder diesel developing 150 hp.

Petrol engines come in a range of four-cylinder units having outputs ranging from 183 to 245 hp, plus a six-cylinder developing 333 hp.

All models available at market launch are equipped with the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. It enables fast gear changes and allows low engine revs, which has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise levels.

The new Mercedes E-Class will be launched later this year and we’ll have more information on this important new business car in due course.
