As a footnote to the previous blog (Strange morning as Citroen story unfolds), I’ve just seen the pictures of the new Citroen DS. And I can see why Citroen marketing and fleet boss Ian Hughes is getting so excited about the future direction of Citroen.
The Citroen DS is, for the moment, a concept. But I’m sure we’ll see it this time next year as a fully finished production car. It looks like Citroen’s answer to the MINI.
According to Citroen, DS stood for a new approach to automobiles and the future. And the future Citroen range will be characterised by a DS naming system: DS3, DS4 and DS5. DS: Different Spirit.
I remember the first time I sunk into the back of the original Citroen DS. I was, what, about 15. A friend’s mum had one. Wow! It was automotive gliding…the Citroen didn’t seem to understand the meaning of road bumps. It just glided over them.
I see that the Citroen DS has also been voted the most beautiful car of all time. That was the verdict when Classic & Sports Car magazine polled a jury of the world’s leading car designers to nominate the most gorgeous cars ever.
The 20-strong panel ranged from Car designer of the Century Giorgetto Giugiaro – the man behind the Maserati Bora, VW Golf, Fiat Panda and Lotus Esprit – to current Jaguar director of design Ian Callum, and each picked their top three beauties.
Although Ferrari secured the most votes as a marque, they were spread across nine different models, leaving the Citroen to scoop the honours as the single most beautiful classic.
