I’m in Geneva, Switzerland, at the moment for the Geneva Motor Show.
I’ve managed to take an interesting variety of transport options to get here: bus and tube to London Heathrow. A BA flight to Geneva for just £115. Then a bus down from Geneva airport to Gare Cornavin, which is close to the hotel and not too far from Lake Leman around which Geneva lies.
I then went to a Toyota press conference that evening on a tram. As you might recall, I’m quite partial to trams: the instant torque, smoothness of power, and a great city asset to sustainable travel.
Which was fine, but having got to the United Nations tram terminus, I walked off and turned left…instead of right. My compass settings obviously need a touch of re-programming. So I was a little later than anticipated at the Toyota press conference.
At the press conference Toyota was all talk about “new mobility solutions”. They revealed the latest Prius with its hybrid system and 89g/km emissions. The all-new seven-seater Verso – it is, apparently, despite looking alarmingly like the outgoing version – yet has emissions of just 140g/km for the diesel (which is a 19% company car tax banding).
And this is only the start. Toyota said that, despite the current economic situation, it would invest in research and development. And promised plug-in hybrid models to come – you literally plug these into the mains to recharge. Plus 10 new hybrid models by the end of next year.
I’m interested to know what the new mobility solutions from Toyota will be. But judging by the iQ (see road test iQ: Toyota’s tiny tot for grown-up townies) it will all be fascinating stuff.
