226 – The DriveTech Advantage

Share

15 June 2009

My son Matt is 17. And that means he’s mustard keen to drive. Armed with a provisional licence, Matt has been ready for driving lessons these past few weeks.

We’ve decided to go with DriveTech. DriveTech does more than just teach you to pass the test; it teaches you to drive.

I was very keen on this. I wanted to make sure that Matt went on an advanced driving course once he had passed – simply because I’ve been on a couple of Audi Advanced Driving courses. These undoubtedly helped make me a better driver – even though they were held on Castle Combe race track.

DriveTech’s Advantage course includes workshops, lessons and, once you’ve passed, lessons on driving in poor weather, on the motorway, night driving and a performance course. At the end of it, you also get a City & Guilds in driving competence, which I’m sure will help with insurance. So it’s got all the elements.

The day finally arrived for Matt. Craig, the DriveTech trainer turned up for Matt on Sunday morning. The cars are Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 hatchbacks but with VXR bodykits, which makes them look inviting.

I’ll let Matt take up the story: “It was really good. I was so nervous. But Craig is good fun and talks you through it so you know what you’re doing.

“We went through all the controls first. And Craig asked me which pedal made the car go. I said the accelerator, but we discussed it and, of course, it’s the clutch. The clutch engages the engine; the accelerator makes it go faster.

“Craig then made me drive down the road without touching the accelerator in first, and then every gear up to fourth. It was quite amazing really.

“The car was fun too, the sports pack makes it look really good.”

I’ll keep you updated on how Matt gets on.
