CONFESSION moment: I’m a great lover of five-cylinder engines. I just think the sound of the off-beat five-cylinder warble is intoxicating.
It’s also a great way to get V6-type power without resorting to additional weight.
When Audi revamped the Audi 100 to create the Audi A6 (not much more than a badge to be honest) they introduced a five-cylinder 2.3-litre version of the estate model. Good to drive, tuneful, and economical it was the pick of the range – at least I thought so.
I’ve had my own five-cylinder Audi, too – the S6. What a great car! So I was really looking forward to driving the new TT RS Coupe.
It’s the first coupe in the RS line – traditionally the preserve of Avant and saloon models. And is very much in the heritage of the original eighties Audi Quattro with its 200PS five-cylinder turbo engine. But the new TT RS has 340PS at its disposal.
