305 – Versatile car-van

Share

3 October 2009

IT’S SURPRISING what you can get for your money now. Take the Citroen Berlingo Multispace. For an additional £800 you can turn this five-seater car (based on the Berlingo van) into a seven seater. Yet it costs under £13,500. Which means you’re in supermini territory. Terrific value.

Such cars must be particularly attractive to traders that need that sort of van/car versatility: florists are a good example. You’re essentially getting the practicality of a van; and the comfort of a car. Fold up the seats in the Berlingo Multispace (having taken out the additional two rear seats) and you get a massive area.

Certainly they look more functional – it’s difficult to disguise the boxy van origins. And personally I like the smaller Nemo Multispace. It has an attractive utilitarian quality, rather like the Fiat Qubo. I can see these vehicles having wide appeal to younger drivers who want to surf at the weekend. And perhaps for those traders on the coast too.

You can read a road test of the Citroen Berlingo Multispace here.
