5 bizarre speed limits that could catch you out

4. No Speed Limit – most Autobahn, Germany

Germany is the exception to the otherwise fairly typical European rule of around the 65-75mph speed limit on its highways. On a number of its Autobahn expressways, there is no legal speed limit – not even a little bit.

There is a recommended speed of 130kph (around 80mph), and of course drivers will be pulled over and reprimanded by German traffic police if their speed causes their style of driving to border on the dangerous, but a lot of roads do not limit speed.

5. 11mph – motorway traffic work, UK

In the UK, it’s rare to see anything other than a speed limit that’s divisible by 10. Sometimes you’ll see a 5mph sign in a car park or drop off point, but only once in a blue moon do you get the bizarre prime number limit of 11mph.

However motorway traffic workers do, on occasion, introduce these utterly baffling limits to coned-off areas. The reasoning is somewhat similar to the 13mph limit from  Number 3 – set an unusual and almost unheard of speed limit, and more people will pay attention and comply out of sheer bewilderment than anything else.

If you’re ever driving in any of these countries, and on any of the roads mentioned, then keep an eye out for these gob-smacking speed limits – you don’t want to get caught out for doing 10 ¾ mph.

This post was written by Tom McShane – speed-limit-abiding driving, blogger, and writer for McMillans Solicitors – a UK specialist motoring and drink driving solicitors firm.
