We’re used to getting caught out by sneekily placed 30mph signs, but these 5 weird speed limits take the biscuit

SPEED limits are constantly on our mind when we’re behind the wheel – from panicking to remember what the current speed limit is set at, to constantly checking to make sure we’re not creeping over the limit.

Some speed limits seem frustratingly slow, whereas others seem unnecessarily (and dangerously) high – but these five speed limits from around the world win prizes for being the most unusually baffling.

1. 10 ½ MPH – Copake, NY, USA

Even by squinting and haphazardly getting out a ruler mid-drive, it’s virtually impossible to gauge a fraction of a mile-per-hour. Yet these 10 ½ mph speed limit signs are not an uncommon site in the town of Copake, New York. The thinking behind them is not for people to actually drive at this speed, but for the limit to be so outrageously arbitrary in its nature that people take more notice of it – and it works!

2. 1.86mph (3kph) – public car park, Israel

While it’s not strictly on a road (instead, in a car park) this almost pointlessly-low speed limit is legally enforceable thanks to an official sign. The 3kph limit is equal to around 1.86mph, and will barely even register on anyone’s speedometer – you’ll get there quicker by hopping out and walking.

3. 13mph – Haverford College, Pennsylvania, USA

It’s not uncommon to see 10, 15 or 20mph speed limits on smaller roads – or even 5mph on narrow side streets or in car parks. But at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, there is a strict 13mph speed limit in force – get counting those markers!
