Of course, I did have my Mr Sensible hat on, too. I tested the 120PS version of my current Audi A4 2.0 TDI SE. You can read the car review here – Audi A4 TDI: lower tax diesel.
So what’s it like? Very good, actually. It doesn’t have the crispness of the 143PS version. But if you prefer your driving more relaxed then it will be fine.
Where do you notice this? Joining the motorway; or speeding up after 50mph speed reductions for road works. In my 143PS A4 you squeeze the throttle and the car rushes forward as if propelled from behind by some unseen hand. You don’t get the same effect, the same amount of urge, in the 120PS Audi A4.
I thought I’d do a few calculations to work out the company car tax differences the difference in the business car leasing contract hire quotes – the best was from Masterlease. So, over three years and 30,000 miles with no maintenance, this is what you get.
Audi A4 2.0 TDI 120 SE
- P11D price: £22,150
- Tax band: 18%
- Tax per month: £69 (20%)/£138 (40%)
- Monthly rental: £302
Audi A4 2.0 TDI 143 SE
- P11D price: £23,300
- Tax band: 19%
- Tax per month: £75 (20%)/£150 (40%)
- Monthly rental: £310
As you can see, not a lot in it – some £73 at 20% or £145 at 40% in terms of tax for the year; and £96 over the year for the rental.
So what’s the advice? If you want best value, and a relaxed drive, then the 120PS version is for you. If you value a bit more power in your driving, then the 143PS is worth the little bit extra. It’s where my vote goes.
Either way, you won’t feel short-changed.
