It’s surprising given the current popularity of alternatively fuelled vehicles that only one hybrid has made this list. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid marries a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor which develops 100bhp, but more importantly returns 86mpg and only 75g/km. It’s the only non-electric supermini to avoid the daily London congestion charge which is a big plus for urban commuters.
A 5 per cent BIK company car tax rating for this year also makes it the cheapest supermini to run as a company car, but from next year the figure will rise to 9 per cent.
