What is it?

AN all-new version of BMW’s mid-size 4×4 set to rival the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and the Land Rover Freelander. BMW has chosen an all-diesel line up and will launch with 184PS 2.0-litre unit with 3.0-litre versions to follow. The new X3 is bigger, more powerful and quicker than before but also far more efficient with both the 2.0d and 3.0d coming in below the 160g/km cut-off for capital allowance taxation. Tested here is 2.0d SE priced at £30,490.

What’s hot?

  • Impressive CO2 emissions: 2.0d manual is 149g/km; auto 147g/km
  • Stop-start technology on the auto means fuel consumption of 50.4mpg
  • Boot space is up to 550 litres from 480
  • Styling now looks like a small X5
  • Good equipment levels (leather is standard)
  • Excellent whole life costs
  • Steering weight and feel is first rate
  • Great body control and a fun drive
  • More comfortable than most BMWs
  • New 8-speed automatic gearbox is ultra smooth
  • Prices £115 lower than the outgoing car

What’s not?

  • Precious little
  • Pedals off-set to the right, particularly an issue in the manual version
  • Options can quickly push the car to £40,000
  • Styling makes the car look just like a small X5

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

As a business car there’s little to dislike with the new X3, and much to commend it – unless you think the looks are too similar to the X5. Emissions, and therefore benefit in kind company car tax bands, are class leading and fuel consumption is impressive too. As with the new BMW 5 Series it seems BMW has also given the new BMW X3 a good level of comfort too. If you want a compact SUV as your business car, this is a good place to start.
