BUSINESSES remain focused on cost reduction policies for company transport.

The latest Business Travel Index from daily rental company Avis reveals companies remain wedded to no-frippery travel.

During the first half of 2010, the majority of businesses chose either compact or economy class vehicles.

Furthermore, 59% of business customers rented on a daily basis, with 8% opting for a long-term rental, according to the Index.

Car rental index reveals economy cars most popular

Avis said that the latest findings indicated that despite emerging signs of economic recovery, businesses were still spending cautiously, adding that more than half of all rentals (51%) were from ‘downtown’ (non-airport) locations.

“The recession has had a huge influence in the way our corporate customers are operating,” commented Anthony Ainsworth, UK sales director at Avis

“A prime example is the increase in downtown pick-ups and daily car rental, which tells us businesses, particularly in the SME market, are recognising the value of face-to-face business with their customers and are looking to car hire to help strengthen those relationships,” Mr Ainsworth added.

Avis said the SME market was responsible for 12% of Avis’s corporate business in the first half of this year.

The Index also highlighted SME preference for a hands-on relationship – preferring to book on the phone rather than online. Avis said SME customers wanted the reassurance that their requests, often last minute, were dealt with personally.

“Given the current economic climate, it is vital businesses know what options are available to them,” added Mr Ainsworth.
