SEAT Ibiza Cupra

SEAT Ibiza SC New 1.4 16V TSI Cupra 180PS DSG

SEAT Ibiza SC 1.4 16V TSI Cupra 180PS DSG

What is it?

A HOT hatch that promises to be as fiery as the island it’s named after. The Ibiza Cupra packs a 180PS 1.4-litre super-turbo engine, a seven-speed twin-clutch paddle-shift gearbox and an electronic differential into a stylish and compact package. Priced from £15,995, it undercuts the RenaultSport Clio 200 by £755 and the Vauxhall Corsa VXR by £1,200.

What’s hot?

  • Amazing engine has lots of supercharged low rev urge…
  • …which switches smoothly to high-rev turbo punch
  • Zero to 60mph takes just 7.2 seconds
  • Twin-clutch gearbox blips the throttle on the downshift
  • Meaty steering has sharp turn-in
  • Body control good with lots of grip
  • Lovely slashes in exterior set off by bold colours…
  • …and well-judged bodykit
  • Sports seats hold you firmly in position
  • Returns an amazing 44mpg despite all that pace
  • Comfortable ride and quiet on the motorway

What’s not?

  • Electronic diff feels artificial
  • ESP cuts in quite early to quell wheelspin
  • Engine can get rather thrashy at high revs
  • DSG lacks the interaction of a manual gearbox
  • Steering lacks feel too

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

There’s no doubting the Ibiza Cupra’s showroom appeal – the combination of sporty looks and that technical specification is hard to beat for the price. But while it’s a very fast, grippy and capable hot hatch, it misses out on that vital sparkle that a RenaultSport Clio has in spades. That said, it’s still a great value, economical fast car.
