Could your business benefit from some professional advice for its car or van fleet? Colin Tourick, author of all our Knowledge Bank articles, suggests not only will you benefit, but you’ll save money, too. If you are reading Business Car Manager it’s likely you have a small fleet of cars and are searching for information.

Perhaps you want to understand about contract hire.

Or want to work out whether your leasing company’s early termination charge is reasonable.

However, it might be that you have a big question such as “What’s the best way for me to reduce my business car costs?”

Or: “How can I save tax?”

Even if you read the Knowledge Bank you will have to read through a vast amount of information – over 170,000 words – before you can see the complete picture and decide how to proceed.

(I know, I wrote it!)

Another approach is to engage a fleet consultant and ask them to help you. Need to choose the ideal cars for your drivers? Or drive down costs? Or save tax? Or assess your risks under health and safety legislation?

A fleet consultant can give you fast answers that are relevant to your particular business. You are an expert in your field; they are in theirs.

But won’t they be expensive?

Aren’t fleet consultants just for bigger companies? The answer is no.

Most fleet consultants offer a free initial meeting. After that the advice will cost you less than you think. And the benefits are likely to outweigh the costs – significantly.

For example, a recent small project was for a fleet of 20 vehicles. These cost L168,000 a year to run. Having looked at how they were bought, maintained and then sold – plus the vehicle choice and tax consequences – L14,000 of annual savings were identified. Plus several ways to reduce the company’s fleet risks.

The cost for this saving was under L4,000. So this particular business will make a profit of L10,000 in the first year – and save over 8% of their fleet costs every year in future, while also reducing their risks.

How many other investments can generate this return?

So fleet consultants are as relevant for small businesses as they are for bigger companies. Especially when there are real bottom line benefits.
