Fiat 500 named Car of the Year

The Fiat 500 is the international Car of the Year.

The Fiat beat the Mazda2 (second) and Ford Mondeo (third).

There are 58 specialist motoring judges that decide the winner.

To be eligible, the cars must go on sale in five different European markets. Judgments are then made on: design, comfort, safety, economic operation, driveability, performance, practicality, respect for the environment, price, and value for money.

Among the UK judges are The Independent’s motoring writer – and businessmotoring.co.uk road test contributor – John Simister.

How the judges voted

  • Fiat 500 385 points
  • Mazda2 325 points
  • Ford Mondeo 202 points
