WE’VE now had a chance to look at the production version of the second-generation Clubman estate.

As we predicted in our preview (New MINI Clubman, what you need to know), this is the biggest MINI yet – 270mm longer and 73mm wider than the previous big F-Generation model, the F55 five-door. The new Clubman is also 100mm taller, with a boot volume of 360 litres which can be extended to 1,250 litres by folding the rear seats flat.

The models we saw – Cooper and Cooper S – were pre-production versions and although the extra length is obvious, we think that the extra width of the new Clubman over F55 and F56 hatches is well hidden by clever sculpting of the bonnet.

Other neat design details include the working vents round the fog lights, which carry on with another vent at the back of the arch in front of the door, leading to a cut out pressed into this new MINI’s flanks. This is apparently one of the MINIMALISM fuel-saving features, drawing air around the front to the sides of the biggest MINIs.

At the back of the new Clubman, the charismatic twin rear doors remain, although curvier than before and with the rear lights (optionally LEDs) mounted horizontally on them.

Another clever feature at the rear of the biggest MINI is a sensor under the rear bumper – waggle your foot under it and the rear doors open. Useful if you’ve got your arms full!

Inside, with the new dashboard design and centre console, we believe this is the classiest New MINI yet. Continuing the upmarket feel, there’s a hand-stitched leather steering wheel, which we’re told will be standard on all models. Sat-nav, an electric parking brake and power seat adjustment will also appear on all new Clubman models.

Take a seat and the extra length is obvious in the front and the back – this MINI is a proper five-seater and rear legroom is good. The boot is practically shaped and spacious too.

Under the bonnet is the latest generation of MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology engines, with MINI claiming CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km and fuel economy up to 68.9mpg. Helping CO2 reduction will be the optional 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, available for the first time.

We will have a first drive of the new Clubman in November, but until then we’ll have to take MINI’s word for it when they say that expected exceptional handling will come courtesy of a bespoke suspension set up.

Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S Clubmans are available to order now, with prices starting at £19,995. Built at Plant Oxford, the Clubman will go on sale in the UK on 31 October. On first look, we reckon new Clubman owners could be having a very happy Halloween.
