Ford Focus 1.0t EcoBoost
It’s a lockout! Ford refuses to play ball with normal keyless fob

Story: RALPH MORTON

I THOUGHT I’d have a quick go in Richard’s Ford Focus. It’s been a while since I’ve driven the 1.0t EcoBoost gem – if you’re in the mood it’s like being in a Focus ST. But without the cost. And, well ok, some of the power, too.

But the Focus said: no.

A mistake, surely. I pointed the key fob at the Focus again.

Same response. Nothing. No swinging out of the door mirrors and the thunk of the door locks retracting.

Hmmmm….

I phoned Richard. Apparently the same thing happened to Richard’s wife on one occasion. Use the manual key Richard advised.

It’s hidden within the ‘keyless’ fob. You ping the Ford cover off the fob, and there is a key.

What you need in an emergency…and emergency manual key hidden with the Focus key fob

Inserted into the lock, I turned it, the alarm started, closed door, locked car with key fob, alarm stopped…

And now the fob works perfectly. Bingo!

Perhaps rather like the time when the power steering went briefly on the blink, the Ford Focus is prone to the odd glitch – easy to overcome. But slightly irritating.

But not as bad as being left stranded and needing the emergency services call out.
