Ford Grand C-MAX 163PS TDCI
What is it?
MUCH called-for seven-seater C-MAX. New Grand C-MAX has a 140mm longer wheelbase, a body that’s 58mm taller and family friendly features such as sliding rear doors over the five-seater C-MAX (see our test of the C-MAX). Prices start from £18,745 – some £2,000 more than the five-seater. Tested here in 163PS TDCI diesel trim – a flagship model which will be available next year and costs around £22,500.
What’s hot?
- Highly flexible cabin…
- …Centre middle seat folds underneath right passenger seat…
- …giving ‘walk-through’ access to final two seats
- Middle row slides back and forth, all seats fold flat simply
- Sliding seats aid access too, lots of headroom all-round
- Centre console very classy. Modelled on a mobile phone it looks great…
- …and cabin material quality is as good as Audi or BMW
- New 163PS diesel is smooth and very rapid (0-62mph in 8.6 secs)
- Returns 55.3mpg and emits 134g/km too
- Despite weighing 110kg more than the five-seater…
- …handling is great. New torque vectoring ensures stability and agility
- While the ride is slightly softer than the smaller C-MAX
- High-speed refinement is superb too
- Options include automatic parking, blind spot monitoring, power tailgate
- Standard kit includes Bluetooth, alloys, piano black Sony audio system
What’s not?
- Smart front end but extra height, longer wheelbase and sliding doors…
- …don’t really integrate well with Ford’s kinetic design language
- Although prices haven’t been confirmed…
- …this flagship diesel will tread on the toes of the even larger S-MAX
- Add in desirable options and the price tag will be even higher

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating
Like the five-seater Ford C-MAX, the Grand C-MAX successfully mixes a sporty driving experience with real comfort and a highly flexible and well made cabin. What’s more the flagship diesel engine strikes a fine balance between performance and economy. However, it’s not very good-looking and quite pricey too. Family buyers after seven seats would be advised to look at the larger S-MAX as well, which offers even more space for not much more money.
