Ford Mondeo 1.6T Duratec 160PS Titanium EcoBoost Estate road test report

Ford Mondeo 1.6T Duratec 160PS Titanium EcoBoost Estate

What is it?

FORD’S revised new Mondeo with new-look front grille, raised bonnet, LED running lights and a superior interior trim finishing.

Included in this comprehensive update for both the hatchback and estate are new EcoBoost petrol engines, including this 1.6-litre version tested here.

The key advantage of this engine is its BIK for company car drivers – the same as a less powerful 2.0-litre Ford Mondeo diesel. In other words, no company car tax penalty for choosing a petrol Mondeo. Estate car tested in Titanium trim costs £21,545 on the road. The hatchback costs £20,445.

What’s hot?

  • Engine is super smooth but with lots of low-down punch…
  • …so it retains the low-down driveability of a diesel
  • There’s also an additional overboost function in fifth and sixth gears
  • This helps boost torque – throttle responsiveness – to 270Nm
  • Without a diesel’s weight penalty it feels more lithe and alert on the road
  • It’s so quiet, too, especially on the motorway
  • Ride is supple and accommodating
  • Interior updates are impressive
  • Level of fit and finish is good plus there’s ambient lighting
  • Standard kit is long, including Bluetooth, air con, cruise, 17ins alloys
  • Plus Ford’s brilliant frost-defeating Quickclear heated front windscreen
  • And Ford Easy Fuel to prevent misfuelling
  • Self-levelling rear suspension for heavier loads
  • Bags of rear seat accommodation for passengers
  • Vast load area in the boot
  • Action of gearshift through the gate has precision-machined quality
  • Official mpg is 41.5mpg; we averaged 37.2mpg

What’s not?

  • Fuel consumption suffers if you use the power
  • Still don’t get the additional mileage of diesel between fill ups
  • High mileage drivers will be better off in more economical diesel
  • Might get orphaned in a general stampede for diesel
  • We have to wait for start-stop version
  • Not much else

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

This is the best Mondeo we’ve driven. It’s an outstanding car that delivers high levels of executive car refinement without sacrificing driver enjoyment or practicality. Add in its favourable company car tax position, and it’s a seriously good business car proposition. Try one – you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
