IF you are one of the many company car drivers considering downsizing your company car you may be interested to hear that orders are now being taken for the new sixth generation VW Polo range.
VW’s perennially popular supermini has sold by the millions – 14 million worldwide since it was first introduced 42 years ago – but it’s no longer quite so mini, although we suspect it will still be super.
For the first time the Polo is also only available as a five-door making it even more practical. The main focus on the new model has been space, both in the cabin and in the boot, all of which means the new Polo is a bigger car. It still sits in the supermini class but it is longer, wider, and offers more headroom than before.
In terms of looks it is very similar to the outgoing model but the new VW Polo has a sharper, more sculpted feel about it. The long wheelbase and short body overhangs create a sportier and more dynamic looking car. The new car is longer, wider, and despite a lower overall height has improved headroom versus its predecessor.
The interior on the other hand, has been completely revamped with new digital instruments arranged alongside the infotainment system, a new glass-encased eight-inch touchscreen unit offered as standard across the entire Polo range. It is replete with all the latest technology, including City Emergency Braking with new Pedestrian Monitoring function, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Blind Spot Detection.
There’s a range of engines and trim options to choose from – although not all will be available immediately – with the new VW Polo available in both petrol and diesel variants. All promise to be economical and comply with current emissions regulations. More to the point, most of those options will offer the low emissions and BIK tax rates company car drivers tend to prioritise.
As a diesel the Polo will offer a choice of two 1.6 TDI engines with an output of either 80 PS or 95 PS. There are six petrol engines ranging from the naturally aspirated 1.0 MPI with 65 PS to the turbocharged 2.0 TSI with 200 PS found in the range-topping GTi and GTi+ models.
With prices for the new VW Polo starting from just £13,855, extra space, and a wide range of engine and trim options it’s likely the Polo will be around for another 42 years and 14 million cars.
