It enjoys E-Mode – setting off on electric power alone and a total of three motors. A turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder direct-injection engine (TSI) produces 299PS while the extra 101PS comes from two electric motors. Plus it can cover up to 31 miles kilometres on a battery charge.
All-wheel drive comes with an “electric propshaft” where energy for the rear axle is transferred by wire and not a mechanical link.
And because the petrol engine drives the rear electric motor via the front electric motor, the all-wheel drive system also operates with a low battery state of charge.
Still for the user-choosers planning next year’s wheels the Golf GTI Clubsport boasts:
- Its 1.6-litre TSI motor delivers 265PS;
- Thanks to a boost function, 10% more power is available in short bursts;
- Motorsport like down force from a new front bumper, rear spoiler, diffuser and new side sills;
- Racing bucket seats and numerous exclusive equipment details as standard.
