Volkswagen’s hot hatch Golf GTI range has just expanded – with the introduction of a diesel GTD model.

The new VW Golf GTD goes on sale June, one month after the new Golf GTI.

Power for the new Golf GTD comes from a 2.0-litre common rail TDI engine. It produces 170PS for a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds.

There is also 258 lbs ft of torque – available from 1750rpm – that helps provide that effortless low-down response.

Despite the performance, fuel economy is 53.3mpg. CO2 emissions are 139g/km – placing the Golf GTD in only the 18% company car tax band.

The new Golf GTD has its ride lowered by 15mm. It will also feature the Golf GTI’s honeycomb grille, badge-style and front-end design. But with the addition of chrome rather than red highlights. Wheels are unique 17-inch ‘Seattle Black’ alloys.

Inside the Golf GTD has a flat-bottomed steering wheel, GTD gearshift and a standard tartan interior.

Safety features include anti-lock ABS brakes; anti-skid ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme); and seven airbags, including a knee airbag.

The new VW Golf GTD is available to order from the end of April. It goes on sale June 22.

Prices for the new Golf GTD are:

2.0 TDI 170PS 3dr, £21,850;

2.0 TDI 170PS 5dr, £22,435;

2.0 TDI 170PS DSG 3dr, £23,155; and

2.0 TDI 170PS DSG 5dr, £23,740.

How they compare: Golf GTD v Golf GTI

    • Economy: 53.3mpg v 38.7mpg
