The supermini is well priced but lacks power

What’s not?

  • Yes the 1.2-litre petrol should be cheap to tax and run as a business car, but this i20 Coupe was definitely a sheep in wolf’s clothing, as the weakest link was the performance – or lack of it. You need to work this petrol engine and its five-speed manual gearbox hard to get all 83bhp out of it!
  • The 1.4-litre diesel is probably a more relaxed option for business buyers with long distances to cover with its 68.9mpg fuel consumption.
  • Although based on the same wheelbase as the standard i20, with just the two-doors and a curvier roofline, rear passengers will feel more comfortable in the standard i20 five-door hatch.

Verdict

If you like the idea of the Hyundai i20 supermini in sharper three-door clothes, then the Coupe has real appeal – especially, as its high value ethos means you’ll not want for standard equipment.

True, the 1.2 engine needs to be worked hard to extract its performance, but it’s better on company car tax than the 1.4 diesel (£456 for a 20% tax payer over 12 months versus £557 for the diesel) and it will also deliver reasonable fuel costs too.

You’ve also got the back up of Hyundai’s five year unlimited mileage warranty, five years’ roadside assistance, and five year annual health checks thrown in as part of the package.

The new Hyundai i20 Coupe – it’s sharp and sensible at the same time.
