Inside the Q50 is full of kit and very well put together

And because the system, which has taken 15 years to develop, works electronically you can set your own personal steering preferences on a touch screen. There are up to four modes available to suite different styles of driving and types of road.

Yet despite not using a mechanical steering rack the car has to have one on board as a failsafe system – just in case the electronics ever go wrong.

Infiniti Q50 models with DAS also come with what Infiniti claims is the most effective and sophisticated lane-keeping system yet developed because it’s the only one to use the steering to ensure the car stays between lane markings.

Other systems rely on the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Program to apply braking force on one side of the car in order to alter its course but Infiniti’s Active Lane Control uses a camera to detect the lane the vehicle is travelling in and this information is relayed to the steering control unit which then instigates any necessary corrections.

The hybrid, which is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, comes with the new steering system as standard but if you want it on the diesel it will cost you an extra £800. Both models come with seven-speed automatic gearbox although the entry-level diesel comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Prices for the hybrid start from £40,000 while the diesel starts from £27,000. The Infiniti Q50 goes on sale in the UK in November.
