Jaguar XF 2.7d Luxury Auto 4dr

What is it?

The future of Jaguar. New XF consigns the retro-inspired S-Type to the history books with a striking new look, beautifully executed interior and a range of revised 3.0-litre, 4.2-litre normally aspirated and supercharged petrol engines plus the 2.7-litre diesel tested here.

What’s hot?

  • The looks. Sweeping shape and muscular tail are just gorgeous
  • Interior is even better with classy leather and aluminium trim
  • Theatrical start-up sequence sees the air vents swivel open
  • …and the cylindrical gearlever rise up from the centre console
  • Ride is cosseting and there’s very little wind noise
  • Handling is best-in-class with fabulous poise, feel and agility
  • Diesel isn’t as punchy as a 530d…
  • …But it’s still, fast, refined and frugal
  • Six-speed auto offers creamy smooth shifts and great manual control
  • Base-spec Luxury model comes with Bluetooth and satnav

What’s not?

  • Woeful emissions. Only the diesel falls below the 225g/km mark
  • That grille is gaudy and there’s something not right about the lights
  • There still isn’t that much headroom or legroom in the back

Business Car Manager road test verdict

The front-end styling may split opinion but everything else about the Jaguar XF stacks up. It stands out, has an interior that makes the driver feel special and performs brilliantly on the road. It’s a truly modern Jaguar that’s full of soul ‚Äì and makes its BMW and Mercedes rivals feel very dull by comparison. And the Jaguar XF diesel is the business car choice to have.
